Maunawai stands for natural, pure, and top-quality drinking water – inspired by nature, developed in Germany. The brand combines decades of research into PI® technology from Japan with a clear goal: clean, living, and energetically high-quality water for every household.
Maunawai follows a holistic approach: not only focusing on purification but also on restoring the natural structure and energy of water – just as it is found in pure mountain springs. Maunawai relies on sustainable materials, simple application, and complete independence from electricity or chemicals.
How Maunawai came into being
The story of Maunawai begins with Maria Knoch's personal experience. When her son was diagnosed with severe neurodermatitis many years ago, doctors recommended cortisone – but Maria sought a natural way to heal. In her intensive search, she realized how crucial pure drinking water is for our health.
In 1996, she stumbled upon Japanese PI technology, which naturally filters and energizes water. Enthusiastic about its effects, she brought the method to Europe and opened her own natural store to make PI water better known.
Despite initial skepticism from her surroundings, she steadfastly pursued her vision: to make high-quality, living water accessible to everyone. This is how MAUNAWAI® came into being – a filter system that is still being developed today, with the goal of supporting human health and nature. Even today, Maria Knoch's passion for water is still palpable – over 20 years after its beginnings.
What makes Maunawai special?
PI® 4-stage filtration with ceramic, activated carbon, zeolite, EM ceramic, and mineralization
Vitalization through structure-modifying elements – for soft, living water
Completely powerless & chemical-free – the filter systems work via mains pressure or purely by gravity
Whether for home, practice, or on the go – Maunawai offers the right filter with PI® technology for every life situation.
How Maunawai works – purification & vitalization with PI® technology
All Maunawai water filters work with the proven PI® technology, based on scientific research and decades of experience. The goal is to treat tap water so that its purity, structure, and energy are as close as possible to natural spring water – and completely powerless, chemical-free, and sustainable.
The multi-stage filter system works as follows:
Ceramic pre-filter: Removes coarse particles, rust, germs, and suspended solids
Activated carbon & zeolite: Binds chlorine, medicinal residues, pesticides, and heavy metals
PI® module with EM ceramic & mineral stones: Restructures the water, restores its natural order
Vitalization unit: Energizes the water using vibrational information and natural frequency transmission
The result is living, fresh PI® water – soft in taste, easily digestible, and ideal for daily consumption. Maunawai turns simple tap water into a high-quality food – for the whole family.
What is the lifespan of Maunawai systems?
In our experience, both Pitec and Peka systems are very durable. So far, we haven't had to decommission any of them, but we have only been selling them for 4 years, so we can't say much about very long service lives.

FAQ – Questions and Answers about Maunawai
Maunawai's PI® technology uses a multi-stage filter system in which water flows through ceramic balls – including PI®, tourmaline, zeolite, and EM ceramic. These elements biologically and energetically structure the water, restoring its natural form, as found in spring water. At the same time, important minerals are retained.
Maunawai is a Hawaiian term meaning "mountain spring." The name symbolizes what Maunawai water filters aim to achieve: water in its most natural, purest form – like fresh from an untouched spring in the mountains. All filters work without electricity, without chemicals, and follow the example of living spring water – clear, mineralized, and energetically structured.
Maunawai water filters reliably remove a variety of pollutants from tap water – in a natural way. The multi-stage PI® filter system combines mechanical, chemical-physical, and energetic purification processes to produce clean, soft, and living water.
Depending on the model (e.g., Maunawai pitcher, PI® PRIMUS, PEKA 10), the following substances, among others, are filtered:
Chlorine and chlorinated compounds
Heavy metals such as lead, copper, mercury, cadmium
Pesticides, herbicides, and other agricultural residues
Medicinal residues and hormone-like substances
Hormones
Microplastics and fine particles
Germs and bacteria (depending on the ceramic filter)
Organic contaminants from old pipelines
The special thing is: Unlike reverse osmosis systems, vital minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium remain in the water.
No – Maunawai systems operate without electricity or pressure, using gravity. No pumps, no electronics, no additional energy consumption.
Kini cartridges and lime pads: approximately every 3 months
PiTec 2in1 cartridge: every 12 months or 10,000 liters
PEKA 10 replacement cartridges (e.g., basic filter, intensive filter, scale protection, arsenic, or PI® modules) are durable and can be used for several months to years, depending on usage. The robust construction ensures long-lasting performance in larger home or office installations.
Absolutely. Maunawai focuses on careful material selection, such as ceramic, zeolite, and activated carbon, avoids single-use plastics and electricity, and promotes water avoidance through plastic bottles. Many components are refillable or recyclable.
All Maunawai products are manufactured in Germany. The brand is the only one in Europe that produces PI® filter pitchers locally – in a family business and with clear quality responsibility on site.
